The Centre for Resilient Agri-food Systems (CRAFS) at the University of Malawi aims to develop and promote knowledge and research capacity of agri-food systems as multi-disciplinary and multifaceted, including food information systems, storage, post-harvest handling, processing, distribution, and consumption. The Centre leverages the UNIMA’s diverse academic disciplines, including computer science, humanities, arts, science and natural sciences, to promote smart agriculture and resilient agri-food systems. CRAFS is funded by the World Bank, through the Government of Malawi, under the Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence Additional Financing project.

Universities of Malawi and Rovuma Sign MoU
|
On 9 August 2023, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) and the University of Rovuma-Niassa Extension in Mozambique signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two universities and improving standards in research, teaching and innovation. Part of the activities will be implemented by the Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS). The MoU was signed by the UNIMA’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu and the Magnificent Rector of the University of Rovuma, Professor Mário Jorge Brito dos Santos.

CRAFS Members attend Communication Training in Dar es Salaam

Two team members from the Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS), Associate Professor Maurice Monjerezi, Deputy Leader of the Centre and Mr. Jimmy Kainja, Communication and Public Relations Coordinator, recently attended a six-day capacity-building workshop in communication from April 16th to 21st, 2023, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. CRAFS joined other Centres of Excellence from Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya.

CRAFS Conducts Short Course in Forecasting Using R
|
CRAFS, in partnership with the Forecasting for Social Good initiative, an official section of the International Institute of Forecasters, is offering a short course in Tidy Time series analysis and forecasting using R to support learning and research in critical areas of resilient agri-food systems. The course is co-facilitated by CRAFS’ Dr Elias Mwakilama and Dr Bahman Rostami-Tabar of Cardiff University.
